How can we be sure that the Council of Nicaea got it right?

Before the Council of Nicaea there were a plethora of competing Christian sects, each with their own radically different views. How can we be sure that, for example, there aren't two gods, one a lesser god who created the universe, and another the "god of light" who could only be reached through secret practices, as the early Gnostic Christians believed?
