Question about washing your hair...?

I usually wash my hair everyday but I want to start washing it every other day so it still has those natural oils. I still want to shower every day though so I don't stink. Am I supposed to like wear a shower cap in the shower so my hair doesn't get wet at all? Or does it not matter if it gets wet as long as I don't wash it with shampoo and such...?
