Toyota MR2 Distributor Trouble?

the distributor in my 1988 Toyota MR2 is leaking oil into the cap, and then onto the exhaust. we just replaced the distributor with a newer one, though it is still used. there is no problem with the o-ring, and we cleaned it thoroughly. I was wondering what all it could be.
